Flush
I love this book. Maybe that's a result of having a penchant for the sentimental, and having grown up with a cocker spaniel, but I also think it would be a delight for anyone who has loved and been loved by an animal.
Virginia Woolf's evocative descriptions and gorgeous prose illuminate this 'biography' of Flush, the loyal canine companion of poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Woolf wrote that she couldn't help but pen this story of Flush after reading the letters of Browning, in which Flush was a major character.
Flush's perspective of the world gives us sharp social commentary, and the story is not without drama - the poor dog is kidnapped! Then moves to Italy!
If you've never read any Woolf this is a brilliant introduction too - the volume is short, digestable and delightful.
